Overview

A pile of Hirayasumi manga volumes, with the first volume on top

ひらやすみHirayasumi is about the carefree country boy and former actor-turned-freeter 生田いくたIkuta ヒロトHiroto, his tightly-wound university art student cousin 小林こばやしKobayashi なつみNatsumi, their small home that they share in the suburbs of Asagaya, their many warm and colorful friends, and the everyday occurrences of their lives in the big city. It is a cozy, sometimes wistful, always heartwarming slice-of-life series that I adore to bits.

The series started as a manga illustrated and written by 真造しんぞうShinzō 圭吾けいごKeigo that has been running in the seinen magazine Big Comic Spirits since 2021 April. As of this writing (2026 January), the series is still ongoing and has been collected into nine volumes. It has also been adapted into a live-action television drama on NHK, with a forthcoming anime adaptation by Production +h. Viz Media is handling the English localization of the manga.

About Shinzo Keigo

Illustrated self-portrait of Shinzō Keigo in profileShinzō Keigo is a manga artist from Ishikawa, along the Sea of Japan. He debuted in 2007 with なんきんNankin, and in 2009, Big Comic Spirits ran his short series 森山中教習所もりやまちゅうきょうしゅうじょMoriyamachū Kyōshūjo, about an aimless college student who spends the summer going to the unlicensed Moriyamachū Driving School. This was adapted into a live-action movie in 2016. From 2015 to 2017, he made Tokyo Alien Brothers, a series about an alien coming to earth and hanging out with his Earthling “brother.” This also was adapted into a live-action television drama in 2018.

In 2020 April while working on ノラとNora to 雑草ざっそうZassō for the magazine Morning Two, Shinzō suspended the series to undergo chemotherapy for malignant lymphoma. Later that year, he announced that his cancer had gone into remission and completed Nora to Zassō. After enduring both a major health scare and its exhausting treatment, he started on Hirayasumi, a work that is both incredibly healing and expresses a deep gratitude for the small, simple pleasures of life.

About this site

Natsumi looking at her phone with an apprehensive expressionEveryday Dream is a little fan site and long-term project of mine. My goal is to detail the characters, write manga chapter synopses, and translate interviews and other items relating to the series. I used to enjoy making fan sites in my youth and thought it would be very fun to start up again. While I appreciate collaborative fan wikis and the like, there’s just something really fun about making your own little space on the web for the stuff you love.

This site will be mostly focused on the Japanese manga, which is what I read. In future, I may add sections for the drama and anime if I watch them. I don’t plan on reading the English localization, so this website may use different names, titles, and phrases from the Viz translation. I try to write out names in the full Japanese (kanji, furigana, and rōmaji) the first time they appear on a page and then revert to just the rōmaji from then on out for simplicity’s sake.

This site was coded in Sublime and collated in Eleventy. No generative AI was used for this site, and also: fuck genAI. All typos, hallucinations, and emdashes are my own. Fonts are Hachi Maru Pop and Zen Maru Gothic, and unless otherwise noted, all of the site graphics come from the digital manga. (Yes, I bought digital copies even though I already own the paperbacks just so that I could get clean images for this site.)

Hirayasumi belongs to Shinzō Keigo and Shōgakukan. Please don’t sue me 🙏
